WEEE Compliance in Europe: Portugal

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Portugal

Under Decree 230/2004 for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from Data Domain after August 13th 2005, Data Domain is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from Data Domain replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the Decree, Data Domain is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from Data Domain after August 13th 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as new WEEE.

Data Domain products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as Data Domain is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products Data Domain has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address.

Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:

  • Data Domain pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the Decree;
  • Data Domain pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the National Waste Institute to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Decree;
  • You pay for transportation of your WEEE to Data Domain's appointed recycler in Portugal.

Data Domain has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Portugal. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of Data Domain products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. Under Portuguese waste management procedures, you should use the following carriers (which have been granted a general licence by the Direcção-Geral dos Transportes Terrestres e Fluviais for the road transportation of goods). The carrier will collect and transport non-hazardous WEEE to the EARN recycler.

South Portugal Recilec +34 954 930 042 n/a

To comply with waste transport legislation in Portugal, all waste electrical and electronic equipment must be accompanied by suitable documentation for transport to the recycler.

In order to comply with these regulations and to enable EARN to identify Data Domain equipment upon arrival at the recycler's address, please download the Recycling Label for Portuguese Customers (North), or the Recycling Label for Portuguese Customers (South). Complete the label with your company details and attach it to a suitable box for transport to EARN.
