“Our DataDomain unit has significantly reduced our backup and restore burden. Tape usage, which previously required weekly manual intervention, is now reduced to an occasional rotation for off-site storage. Even with our wide variety of data, including everything from e-mail to already compressed data sets, we are seeing an aggregate 10x compression ratio. The increased capacity and flexibility our DataDomain unit provides allows us more backup options for our departmental users and has made backups and restores an order of magnitude faster.” — Scott Karlin

WEEE Compliance

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Italy

Under the Italian Decree to implement 2002/96/EC Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive which came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from Data Domain after December 31st 2008, Data Domain is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. This is providing the weight of the old equipment is less than double that of the new purchase. The old equipment that your new purchase from Data Domain replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE. Under the Italian Decree, this take-back system will be established by July 2007.

Under the Decree, Data Domain is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from Data Domain after December 31st 2008, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.

Data Domain products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as Data Domain is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products, Data Domain has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address.

Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:

  • Data Domain pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the Decree.
  • Data Domain pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the Ministry of Environment to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Decree.
  • you pay for transportation of your WEEE to Data Domain's appointed recycler in Italy.

Data Domain has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Italy. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of Data Domain products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. In order to meet Italian regulations for waste disposal, you should use one of the following carriers (which hold a valid Waste Carriers licence):

Waste Carrier Telephone Number Email
Kuehne+Nagel on behalf of S.Eco Servizi Ecologici 02-66502703 venditeol@tecser.it

For larger quantities of waste you may wish to contact the recycler directly in order to arrange and pay for an alternative collection method. The Data Domain recycler in Italy is:

To comply with Italian Waste Transport Regulations all WEEE must be accompanied by suitable documentation when transported to the recycler. In order to comply with this regulation and to enable EARN to identify Data Domain equipment upon arrival at the recycler's address, please download the Recycling Label for Italian Customers. Complete the label with your company details and attach it to a suitable box for transport to EARN.
