WEEE Compliance in Europe: Ireland

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Ireland

Data Domain equipment is sold in Ireland by Channel Partners. The Channel Partner imports the equipment into Ireland. Thus the Channel Partner has the legal responsibility to:

  • Register as the WEEE producer in Ireland
  • Finance arrangements for collection and recycling of WEEE arising from Data Domain equipment that the Channel Partner sells in Ireland

Under SI 340/2005 Waste Management (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment [WEEE]) Regulations which came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from a Data Domain Channel Partner after August 13th 2005, the Channel Partner is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from the Data Domain Channel Partner replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the Regulations, the Channel Partner is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from the Channel Partner after August 13th 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.

Data Domain has decided to provide WEEE collection and recycling on behalf of its Channel Partners in Ireland.

Data Domain products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as Data Domain is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products Data Domain has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address.

Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:

  • Data Domain pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the Waste Management (WEEE) Regulations;
  • Data Domain pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the WEEE Register Society to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the Waste Management (WEEE) Regulations;
  • You pay for transportation of your WEEE to Data Domain's appointed recycler in Ireland.

Data Domain has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Ireland. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of Data Domain products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs of collection and transportation to EARN. Under the Waste Management Act 1996, you should use the following carrier (which holds a valid Waste Carriers licence):

Waste Carrier Telephone Number Website
Transafe Ltd. +353 1 201 6060 www.transafe.ie

For larger quantities of waste you may wish to contact the recycler directly in order to arrange and pay for an alternative collection method. The Data Domain recycler in Ireland is:

Recycler Telephone Number Website
Rehabrecycle +353 12 80 45 34 www.rehab.ie

There is no legal requirement that WEEE be accompanied by documentation when transported in Ireland. However, in order to enable EARN to identify Data Domain equipment upon arrival at the recycler's address, please download the Recycling Label for Irish Customers. Complete the label with your company details and attach it to a suitable box for transport to EARN.

WEEE Reporting Recycling Data for Data Domain Equipment in Ireland

Under Part 3 Section 28 of the Waste Management (WEEE) Regulations, Data Domain Channel Partners must provide annual information on the quantities and categories of electrical and electronic equipment put on the market, reused, recycled and recovered within Ireland.

The first WEEE recycling report will cover the year 2006. EARN will prepare the recycling data report for Data Domain.
