WEEE Compliance in Europe: Austria

Collection and Recycling Arrangements in Austria

Data Domain equipment is sold in Austria by Channel Partners. The Channel Partner imports the equipment into Austria. Thus the Channel Partner has the legal responsibility to:

  • Register as the WEEE producer in Austria
  • Finance arrangements for collection and recycling of WEEE arising from Data Domain equipment that the Channel Partner sells in Austria

Under the Austrian Ordinance on Waste Prevention, Collection and Treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE Ordinance) that came into force on August 13th 2005, for equipment that you buy from a Data Domain Channel Partner after August 13th 2005, the Channel Partner is required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from the Data Domain Channel Partner replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.

Under the WEEE Ordinance, the Channel Partner is also required to finance the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any electrical and electronic equipment that you buy from the Channel Partner after August 13th 2005 when that equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.

Data Domain has decided to provide WEEE collection and recycling on behalf of its Channel Partners in Austria.

Data Domain products are very competitively priced. Any new increase in operating costs for manufacturers such as Data Domain is normally reflected in a price increase in the product. However, instead of increasing the prices of our products Data Domain has decided to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers. We believe in being transparent with you on any new environmental costs that our products need to address.

Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:

  • Data Domain pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the WEEE Ordinance;
  • Data Domain pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water Management to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the WEEE Ordinance;
  • You pay for transportation of your WEEE to Data Domain's appointed recycler in Austria.

Data Domain has established a recycling contract with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN) and will cover any costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the equipment on arrival at the EARN facility in Austria. All New WEEE that arises from the purchase of Data Domain products is classed as non-hazardous waste.

It is your responsibility to arrange and pay for costs collection and transportation to EARN. Under Austrian waste management regulations, you are free to use any carrier you wish to collect and transport the Historic and New WEEE to the EARN recycler.

For larger quantities of waste you may want to contact the recycler directly to arrange and pay for alternative collection arrangements. The Data Domain recycler in Austria is:
