Simplifying Data Deduplication

Many storage vendors have jumped on the deduplication bandwagon with promises of optimizing storage capacities and saving customers precious IT dollars. The buzz around “dedupe” has brought many different flavors of deduplication to the market, making it difficult for prospective buyers to sift through the technical jargon to get at the core attributes of deduplication that will benefit their organizations in the short term, and in the future.

This issue of the Disk Backup Update provides several third-party reports and white papers to help you evaluate how best to integrate deduplication into your environment.
TANEJA GROUP WHITE PAPER
Operational Simplicity
Written by the Taneja Group, this white paper provides a checklist for evaluating disk-based or “D2D” solutions and outlines the key attributes of “Operational Simplicity,” including plug-and-play capabilities; cost-effective, transparent scalability; and non-disruptive, reliable data protection. How does your organization stack up? MORE>
ESG LAB REPORT
Inline vs. Post-Process Deduplication
With inline deduplication, data is deduplicated as it is backed up and replicated. Post-process deduplication requires additional disk to store data before it is deduplicated, and only after that process is completed can it be replicated offsite for disaster recovery purposes. The time it takes to back up, deduplicate and replicate data is often referred to as “Time to DR-readiness.” MORE>

ESG LAB REPORT
Flexible Replication Topologies
One of the key benefits of data deduplication is the ability to replicate or “vault” data over existing wide area networks (WANs), rather than offloading to tape and transporting those tapes to offsite repositories. “WAN vaulting” enables fast remote site replication in a variety of configurations: Selective vaulting, bi-directional replication, and multi-directional replication.
