“Since implementing the Data Domain Restorer we have retired the six DLT tape drives and the 126 tapes used to back-up our data stores. We now rely on the Restorer for all our back up and restore needs.” — Ned Rendell

Axpo Informatik AG Chooses Data Domain

Leading Swiss Energy Company Selects Data Domain to Backup and Replicate Essential Customer Data

SANTA CLARA, CA — Sept. 13, 2006 — Data Domain, the leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, announced today that Axpo Informatik AG, a daughter company of Axpo Group, a leading Swiss energy company, has selected Data Domain’s enterprise data protection solutions to backup and vault its critical enterprise data. With the implementation of Data Domain’s DD460 Enterprise Restorer appliances, Axpo Informatik AG has reduced administration time by 40 percent, achieved its clients’ requirements for extended data retention times, reduced licensing fees, and significantly increased the reliability and speed of its backup and restore operations.

Axpo Group provides energy and energy-related services to nearly three million people and thousands of businesses in northeastern and central Switzerland. Axpo Informatik AG, Apxo’s IT services division, runs a centralized data center serving all state Swiss energy providers. Axpo Informatik AG previously backed up information to traditional tape library systems, but the company’s growing data had pushed the system to its capacity. In addition, its energy provider clients had requested that Axpo Informatik AG extend archive times from 14 to 30 days and replicate data to a secondary system.

“We were simultaneously facing back-up data growth and a requirement to extend backup data retention times. Adding new tape libraries would have escalated client costs for backup and, quite frankly, it did not seem like a viable long-term strategy to pursue,” said Nico Hodel, systems engineer, Axpo Informatik AG. “With tape, we couldn’t be assured that there was no data loss. By implementing the DD460 restorers, we have gone from a start-stop operation with tape drives and tape media to a faster and simpler process that ensures backup integrity and satisfies increased client requirements for data retention and replication. The Data Domain restorers preserved our investment in our existing backup software and were easily implemented without disruption to our operations. The DD460s eliminate all of the mundane tasks I did before.”

By implementing Data Domain’s DD460 Restorers, Axpo Informatik AG has realized a reliable, cost-effective solution that addressed its expanding backup needs. Data Domain’s market-leading next generation data protection solutions free IT managers from the operational inefficiencies, risks and cost associated with tape backup. All Data Domain solutions leverage the company’s advanced deduplication technology to deliver cost-effective, network-efficient data protection using customers’ existing enterprise backup software. With a cache of products and solutions that include the DD400 Enterprise Series restorers with Replication and Virtual Tape Library (VTL) software options, Data Domain addresses the full range of enterprise backup needs with solutions that scale to multiple petabytes of storage capacity.

“Axpo Informatik AG is another tape replacement success story,” said Frank Slootman, CEO and president at Data Domain. “Data Domain’s Capacity Optimized Storage solution has once again proven to be the vehicle of choice for companies who wish to make the move to a reliable disk and network-based data protection solution.”
