Administrative IT Division at Lawrence Livermore National Lab Purchases Five DD200 Recovery Appliances

New Technology Selected for Stellar Recovery Performance and Low Cost

Palo Alto, Calif. - August 5, 2004 - Data Domain™ announced today that the Administrative IT division of the Lawrence Livermore National Lab purchased five DD200 recovery appliances to manage the backup and restores of 5 TB of data across 250 servers. Division officials selected the new disk-based appliances due to their stellar recovery performance metrics and low cost-per-terabyte compared to similar technologies. The recent purchase represents the second division at the lab that has purchased the DD200. Lawrence Livermore National Lab is a U.S. Department of Energy national security laboratory based in Livermore, Calif.

The Administrative IT division is responsible for the labs’ business data, including business-critical Oracle database applications for the DOE-funded lab. Because the division’s data is doubling in size every 18 months, the IT division needed a solution that would scale easily and maintain backups of data - on-site — for at least eight weeks.

In early 2004, the division began looking for a more efficient way to reduce their tape dependency and learned of the DD200 in their search for disk-to-disk solutions. The appliance was then evaluated and tested on-site for several months, and met their criteria for cost-efficient backups and fast recovery. The division purchased five recovery appliances in June 2004.

The DD200 Restorer is the industry’s first disk-based recovery solution that enables users to fully recover data at speeds typically reserved for high-end disk storage devices at a cost similar to tape automation. The appliance uses patent-pending global compression technology to store up to 23 TB of data on disk and is designed for companies that need access to their archived mission-critical information within minutes, not hours.
