“Our DataDomain unit has significantly reduced our backup and restore burden. Tape usage, which previously required weekly manual intervention, is now reduced to an occasional rotation for off-site storage. Even with our wide variety of data, including everything from e-mail to already compressed data sets, we are seeing an aggregate 10x compression ratio. The increased capacity and flexibility our DataDomain unit provides allows us more backup options for our departmental users and has made backups and restores an order of magnitude faster.” — Scott Karlin

Data Domain Announces VTL Certifications with Industry Leading Backup Vendors

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — July 05, 2007 — Data Domain (NASDAQ: DDUP), a leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that leading data backup software providers Atempo, BakBone, CA, EMC and Symantec have certified Data Domain's Virtual Tape Library (VTL) software option for use with their backup offerings.

The Data Domain certifications for Atempo Time Navigator, BakBone NetVault: Backup, CA ARCserve Backup, EMC NetWorker, and both Veritas NetBackup and Backup Exec from Symantec allow customers to easily incorporate Data Domain's high-speed inline data deduplication solutions into their existing backup environment. With Data Domain's VTL option, customers operating in Fibre Channel based environments are able to deploy Data Domain's Enterprise Protection Storage systems for faster, more reliable backup and recovery of data and deploy network-based disaster recovery (DR).

Data Domain allows customers to use both the VTL interface and Data Domain's existing NAS-style Ethernet-based file system interfaces simultaneously. The Data Domain VTL also incorporates full support for Data Domain's Replicator software, so deduplicated virtual tape images can be automatically vaulted across the WAN using minimal bandwidth to an offsite location for disaster recovery, remote office data protection and multi-site tape consolidation. With Data Domain's high-speed inline deduplication technology, WAN vaulting of data can begin at the inception of the backup process, versus after the completion of backup and deduplication, so customers achieve faster time to DR.

"Since announcing the industry's first deduplicating VTL system in early 2006, we've been diligently working with leading backup software providers to further expand the flexibility of Data Domain's solution for our customers," said Brian Biles, co-founder and vice president of product management. "Our VTL option gives customers in Fibre Channel environments the power to move off of traditional tape and leverage all the benefits of disk backup and Data Domain's data deduplication technologies."

Partner Support Statements
"Many organizations today already benefit from the use of NetBackup and Data Domain for centralized disk-based backup and recovery," said Martin Ward, director, product marketing for NetBackup, Symantec. "Certifying Data Domain's VTL solution extends our existing relationship and demonstrates Symantec's commitment to deliver next-generation data protection of heterogeneous protection services."

"Customers have to make recovery management simpler, faster and more reliable to cost-effectively fulfill their compliance, data protection and business continuity requirements," said Frank Jablonski, director of product marketing for storage management at CA. "In conjunction with CA ARCserve Backup, Data Domain's VTL and data deduplication technology delivers the performance, reliability and efficiency necessary to achieve these essential recovery management objectives."

"We are pleased to have completed the certification of the Data Domain Virtual Tape Library with Atempo Time Navigator," said Marylise Tauzia, director of product marketing, Atempo. "Data Domain's powerful, high-speed, inline deduplication technology directly complements our data protection and archiving solutions for heterogeneous environments. Together, Atempo Time Navigator and the Data Domain Virtual Tape Library will enable customers to optimize their data protection and disaster recovery performance while reducing storage costs and recovery times."

"Integration with Data Domain's VTL appliance is key to BakBone's ongoing commitment to offer customers flexible and scalable data protection solutions," said Jeff Drescher, director of product management at BakBone. "The combination of BakBone NetVault: Backup's renowned ease-of-use and Data Domain's Capacity Optimized Storage (COS) technology is an excellent tool for reducing complexity and storage management costs in the datacenter, one of IT's biggest challenges."
