Commercial Law Firm to the Fortune 500 Deploys Tapeless Data Protection Strategy

PALO ALTO, CALIF. — June 7, 2006 — Data Domain, the leading provider of capacity optimized storage (COS) solutions, announced today that Winthrop & Weinstine, a commercial law firm, has selected Data Domain’s enterprise data protection solutions to back up and restore key information related to each case and client it handles. This win highlights Data Domain’s traction in the legal market and underscores the need for capacity optimized storage solutions in professional environments. Since adopting the Data Domain DD430 restorer appliances, Winthrop & Weinstine has achieved 21x data reduction and lowered media costs by over $10,000 per year.

As a full-service commercial law firm, Winthrop & Weinstine has grown to 85 attorneys with clients ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 corporations. For each case it handles, Winthrop & Weinstine acquires and manages a sizable amount of essential data and research. Typically this data resides in document management and e-mail systems and can add up to as much as one terabyte. However, the firm’s backup requirements can change quickly with the addition of new cases and in some instances can double in a week’s time. The firm’s previous HP tape drive solution was costly, difficult to restore, and bore security liabilities when tapes were physically moved between the office and offsite vault.

After engaging with Data Domain channel partner Nexus, Winthrop & Weinstine implemented two DD430 restorer appliances at its Minneapolis site to enhance backup performance, lower tape-based storage costs and reduce liability associated with transporting tapes. Administrators have since reported faster restore times and high availability, triggering the firm’s gradual move away from tape and an expansion of its disaster recovery efforts.
