“Our DataDomain unit has significantly reduced our backup and restore burden. Tape usage, which previously required weekly manual intervention, is now reduced to an occasional rotation for off-site storage. Even with our wide variety of data, including everything from e-mail to already compressed data sets, we are seeing an aggregate 10x compression ratio. The increased capacity and flexibility our DataDomain unit provides allows us more backup options for our departmental users and has made backups and restores an order of magnitude faster.” — Scott Karlin

Data Domain Announces DD400 Enterprise Series

Next Generation Backup-to-Disk Storage Addresses Enterprise-Wide Deployment

PALO ALTO, CALIF. — May 16, 2005 — Data Domain, the leading provider of Capacity Optimized Storage (COS) systems, today announced the new DD400 Enterprise Series, the most scalable, highest-throughput COS systems on the market today. Scaling from branch offices to enterprise data centers, the DD400 Enterprise Series offers unparalleled capacity, throughput, reliability and cost-efficiency.

“When it comes to backup and recovery, we found that tape has many hidden costs — its slow performance, the time spent handling and sending tapes off-site, as well as the risk that data won’t be recoverable. But most disk-based backup systems we looked at were too pricey,” said Ephraim Baron, IT director at EFI. “With the DD460 from Data Domain, we’ve been able to compress and store two to three months of backup data onsite. We’ve cut costs and reduced our reliance on offsite tape storage, and we can back up and restore data at incredible speeds. Best of all, we can easily verify the security and integrity of our data. We’re very pleased — the DD460 is everything we’d hoped for.”

Unlike traditional ATA arrays or VTL systems, COS systems massively reduce disk storage requirements using high-speed Capacity Optimization technology. COS optimizes storage capacity making retention and replication of backup data extremely cost and bandwidth efficient by providing 20x data reduction.

The Data Domain DD400 Enterprise Series works seamlessly with leading backup software, easily integrating directly into existing customer environments. The DD400 Enterprise Series introduces support for IBM/Tivoli TSM, HP OpenView Data Protector and BakBone NetVault, in addition to existing support for VERITAS NetBackup and Backup Exec, EMC/Legato Networker, CommVault Galaxy and Oracle Recovery Manager.

“The DD400 Enterprise Series validates Taneja Group’s assessment that Capacity Optimization is a core storage technology enabling cost-effective replacement of tape automation,” said Arun Taneja, founder and consulting analyst of Taneja Group.

“Backup-to-disk is becoming a best practice in IT, but traditional ATA arrays and VTLs are too expensive for anything more than a local cache-to-tape, so they are just temporary Band-Aids for tape library systems,” said Frank Slootman, CEO of Data Domain. “The DD400 Enterprise Series of COS systems enables customers to implement an end-to-end data protection architecture based on disk and networks, while eliminating the dependency and risk associated with putting tapes on trucks,” Slootman said.
