Data Domain Introduces WAN Vaulting for Enterprise Backup

Off-site Vaulting for Disaster Recovery using Wide Area Networks (WANs) Eliminates the Need for Tape Backup

PALO ALTO, CALIF. — May 2, 2006 — Data Domain, the leading provider of capacity optimized storage (COS) solutions, announced today the industry’s most network-efficient WAN vaulting solution for disaster recovery (DR) and remote office data protection. This announcement spotlights the company’s next major step towards an end-to-end tapeless data protection architecture. While revolutionary in scope, it is evolutionary in deployment; the solution is a simple-to-deploy software option available with all Data Domain restorer appliances, and it supports existing standard backup software deployments.

While disk solutions have been in high demand for on-site backup and retention, disaster protection has continued to rely on tape technology and physical transportation to move the tape media to a geographically remote site for vaulting purposes. Networks have historically failed to accommodate the sheer volume of backup data in a cost-efficient and automated manner. With Data Domain’s market leading deduplication technology, backup data sets are effectively shrunk by 99%, to a size where WAN vaulting is now economically and operationally feasible. While the industry has seen a parade of proprietary network replication technologies attempt to tackle this problem, Data Domain offers the only solution that works with all industry leading enterprise backup software.

“Data Domain is a pioneer in the disk-to-disk backup space,” said Heidi Biggar, analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. “The company uses intelligent data deduplication software to reduce the capacity needed to store backup data by about 20:1 — a metric validated by ESG Labs. By extending the same technology to remote backups, Data Domain makes it possible for organizations to move data over the WAN efficiently and cost-effectively, effectively eliminating the need for error-prone, cumbersome, and non-secure tape vaulting processes.”

“While the industry has made good progress with disk for on-site backup, moving data off-site, so far, has been the almost exclusive foray of tapes and trucks” said Frank Slootman, president and CEO of Data Domain. “With this new capability, industry standard backup data sets can be vaulted over the WAN. Data Domain enables a fully automated, lights-out IT process, no physical logistics required. Our patented deduplication technology has been instrumental in redefining storage economics and is even more critical going forward by enabling Wide Area Network vaulting. Disk backup just isn’t effective if you still need to go to tape to get off-site.”

Data Domain’s WAN vaulting solution is an option available immediately on any DD400 series restorer.

Atheros has been beta testing Data Domain’s new WAN Vaulting capability with impressive results. The new features allow Atheros to add incremental backup data between two sites while using current infrastructure to send critical information to a remote location. Atheros is using the DD Replicator software option to store portions of the previous nights backup data in a remote location, eliminating the risks associated with holding data onsite until it is sent to tape and trucked offsite. “It is like having an ‘insurance policy’ for a disaster at our main site, with the added bonus of simplified, faster backups at our remote locations.”
