Data Domain Announces First Product to Integrate with Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage API

New Software Significantly Increases Management Simplicity, Eliminates Virtual Tape Library Management Overhead

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — March 31, 2008 Data Domain (Nasdaq: DDUP), the leading provider of deduplication storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that it is shipping the Data Domain OpenStorage software option, its first product in support of the new Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) API by Symantec. IT administrators utilizing Data Domain storage systems in conjunction with Veritas NetBackup 6.5 will benefit from new levels of management simplicity and flexibility.

Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage disk option is designed to allow administrators to easily manage key elements of Data Domain operation from within the NetBackup interface. Additionally, NetBackup eliminates the system management overhead of virtual tape libraries (VTLs) and their associated provisioning of imaginary tape drives, slots and cartridges.

“Veritas NetBackup 6.5 OpenStorage API presents a radical idea: What if there could be an interface between an advanced backup application and an advanced disk-based storage infrastructure, where both could leverage each others capabilities?” said Brian Biles, vice president of product management at Data Domain. “It could be simpler and much more feature-rich than a VTL interface, and NetBackup operators could use best practices to manage combined interactions more directly. Data Domain is very excited to be the first to market with storage products that integrate well with OST, and we look forward to many future possibilities in this partnership.”

The new Data Domain OpenStorage software release consists of a software plug-in to the OpenStorage API that runs on the NetBackup Media Manager, which manages an optimized connection to Data Domain storage systems. The integration between these two products allows administrators to control the replication of the backup images between multiple Data Domain systems simply and with a high degree of flexibility from the NetBackup console. Unlike existing interfaces, this paradigm is designed to provide familiarity to NetBackup users, so vaulting of data using WAN replication is an experience similar to vaulting a copy to tape. This consolidated view benefits customers when replicating between two or more remotely located Data Domain systems using Data Domain’s deduplicated, network efficient replication software.

Interwoven, Inc., a global leader in enterprise content management solutions, has implemented Veritas NetBackup 6.5 by Symantec, and is using the OpenStorage API with its Data Domain deduplication storage systems. Raymond Lockley, core systems manager for Interwoven, said, “We completed a successful and stable upgrade to Veritas NetBackup 6.5 this past December and installed the Data Domain OST software option. We can now control our backups, restores, and replication from within the NetBackup interface, and can manage backup services from within the new Data Domain interface. This makes managing these processes incredibly fast and simple. The integration of our Data Domain systems with the OpenStorage platform is transparent, and the cost- and time-saving benefits will be very significant for us.”

“The successful partnership between Data Domain and Veritas NetBackup offers customers a flexible and powerful solution for data protection,” said Matt Kixmoeller, vice president of product management, Symantec. “Data Domain is the first vendor in the Symantec Technology Enabled Program to deliver a qualified NetBackup 6.5 OpenStorage plug-in. The synergy allows Symantec and Data Domain solutions to take another significant step forward in terms of management, performance and simplicity.”
