OuterBay Selects Data Domain Recovery Appliance to Manage Large Volumes of Backup Data

Company Now Keeps More Mission-Critical Information On-site for Fast Restore

Palo Alto, Calif. - February 10, 2004 - Data Domain today announced that OuterBay recently selected the Data Domain DD200 Restorer recovery appliance to backup some 3 TB of mission-critical data at its Campbell, Calif. headquarters. The company selected the innovative backup solution because it needed a faster and more cost-effective way to manage more of its mission-critical data on-site.

OuterBay is an application data management company whose flagship application improves database performance by relocating inactive transactions to lower-cost server/storage solutions.

“Due to OuterBay’s exponential growth over the past year (250%) and our anticipated growth rates over the next year, I was looking for a cost-effective disk-based solution where I could keep more information on-site for more rapid restores,” said Graham Breeze, who oversees the OuterBay data center. “The DD200 has exceeded our expectations in both reliability and speed and will scale to meet our data growth demands in 2004.”

Breeze completed a rigorous evaluation of the DD200 Restorer where the recovery appliance was put through extensive tests with worst-case scenarios. OuterBay purchased the product once the pilot was declared a success.

According to Breeze, one of the unique advantages that the DD200 had against conventional disk-based storage solutions was its ability to compress data and ensure that the data was recoverable and not corrupted.

“We now have assurance that our mission-critical data, the lifeblood of our business, is not only backed up quickly and easily, but I’m fully confident that the data is restorable,” Breeze said.

The DD200 Restorer is the industry’s first disk-based recovery solution that enables users to fully recover data at high speeds typically reserved for high-end disk storage devices at a cost similar to tape automation. The appliance uses patent-pending global compression technology to store up to 23 TB of data on disk and is designed for companies that need access to their archived mission-critical information within minutes, not hours.

Breeze anticipates the adoption of the DD200 may save his company thousands of dollars annually. “Downtime costs companies thousands of dollars a year. By being able to restore mission-critical information within hours, not days, I can be sure that important employee productivity levels will not drop,” Breeze said.
